On a family farm in rural Austria near the Czech border, relatives gather each year for the potato harvest. Everyone, from the oldest to the youngest members, takes part; if you can carry a bucket and walk behind the tractor, you take your place in the field.
The Austrian-German word for potato literally translates to ‘Earth Apple’, and one can see why, as the fruits of the harvest are churned up from the soil. When the last rows are cleared, a few bunches of carrots are pulled from the ground, and the group heads inside for a cold lunch. A simple meal of speck, wurst, boiled eggs, bauernbrot and sauerkraut is laid out on the table to restore tired bodies and close the day together.
